About the Welsh Springer Spaniel

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a loyal, affectionate and fun loving member of the Spaniel family. They are very good with children and make great family pets.

The Welshie is a sporting-hunting dog and, as such, they need exercise and a place to run - they enjoy regular walks, off-leash walking trails, parks and waterways. And they appreciate a large fenced in back yard. Once exercised, they make a good couch potato too.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is closely related to the larger English Springer Spaniel but the Welshie sports and red and white coat, with freckles on the white areas. Males are a bit larger with 46 to 48 cm height at the withers and the females with 43 to 46 cm at the withers. Their weight ranges between 16 and 20 kg.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is known for being friendly and demonstrative but they are briefly cautious of strangers. With the correct training, they can be quite obedient while maintaining their playfulness. As a breed, the Welshie has a good health outlook with a few cases of hip dysplasia or eye disorders. Crate training is recommended with planned mini-absences so your Welshie gets comfortable being alone. They can get very attached to their families.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel has been around for quite some time, historically, but it became recognized in 1902 with successful showings in Europe. The Welshie is recognized in many continents, including Europe, Australia and North America.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel Club of Canada was just established with Canadian Kennel Club support in 2023. If you adopt a Welshie, you can join too and enjoy local club matches. Our Dancing Queen Welsh is a member.
